The sudden lockdown announced by the government to stem the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and in the absence of any comprehensive and coordinated relief, thousands of the poor and needy have been pushed to the brink of starvation. To alleviate their misery, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) is at the forefront of providing food and other relief, all over the country to thousands of citizens irrespective of caste and creed.

In a statement to the media on April 17, the JIH National Secretary – Social Service, Mohammed Ahmed said: “By the Grace of Allah, the support of our well-wishers and the hard work of our volunteers, we have been able to provide food and other relief for almost a million people all over the country. Most of them are extremely poor, who lead a hand to mouth existence and many migrant labourers, who were caught in the lockdown. According to the reports from various states, cities and towns we have provided relief for 8,38,417 people across the country, at a cost of around Rs 10 crore. We distributed 5,80,519 food kits, 4,32,228 cooked food packets, 38,8852 face masks and 3,970 sanitizers. We have also extended financial help to 10,06,553 people and other services to 44,503 people.”

Mohammed Ahmed emphasised: “Jamaat always provides relief and rehabilitation at the time of communal riots and national calamities. We carry out our relief activities among all sections of the society irrespective of their caste and creed. Insha’Allah we will continue this work till the lockdown continues.”
