Around two hundred students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on 13 November, gathered near the Supreme Court, demanding withdrawal of Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations (LCRs) as it bounds the universities across the country under strict rules which are totally undemocratic. The students also submitted a memorandum signed by as many as 2,500 students to the Registrar of the Supreme Court, seeking review of the LCR. The students were of the opinion that the Code of Conduct for Students Union Election in a university should be decided by the authority of the same university in a democratic atmosphere.

The Lyngdoh Committee was constituted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India as per the direction of Supreme Court to frame guidelines on Students Union Elections in Colleges and Universities. The committee submitted its report on 23 May 2006. Its guidelines include that no student who is low on academic performance and attendance can participate in elections. Also the student once contested for any key post will not be able to contest for the next term.
