Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) has won 2 out of the 3 wards it contested in the Local Body bye-elections held in Tamilnadu. Bye-elections were held for vacant wards in the Local bodies of Tamilnadu on October 7. The bye-elections witnessed contest on party lines in 100 wards. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi contested and won the 14th ward of the Tenkasi Municipality in Tirunelveli District, and 3rd ward of the Lalpettai Town Panchayat in Cuddalore District. It lost the 8th ward of the S. Taraikudi Town Panchayat in Virudunagar District.

In the 14th ward of Tenkasi, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi’s candidate Mr. P. Mohamed Ali polled more than half of the votes cast and won the election. The AIADMK candidate came second and the Indian Union Muslim League’s candidate supported by the ruling DMK was pushed to the third position. At Lalpettai, the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi’s candidate Yasir Arafath won defeating the ruling DMK supported National League (Basheer) Candidate. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi’s candidate Habeebur Rahman lost to his DMK rival in the S. Taraikudi ward.

The local elections also witnessed political parties bribing the voters as was done in the Parliament elections. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi’s candidates won without bribing the voters in spite of this immoral behaviour of the rival parties.

In the party-wise contest only DMK, ADMK, Congress, MDMK, MMK and CPI (M) won the seats. Other prominent parties like PMK, CPI, BJP, VC, DMDK drew a blank in the polls. MMK contested the polls on its own. This is the first victory for MMK which was launched in February 2009.

The Chief Coordinator of MMK Dr. M.H. Jawahirullah felicitated the victorious candidates and advised them to serve the people with full vigour and moral strength.
