GST is not merely a tax system; it endorses reforms for the betterment of country’s economy. Empowered with technological advances, it has witnessed emergence of a new economic regime, which will make the entire system user friendly”, said Mr Praveen Kumar, IAS and chief guest while addressing the valedictory session of the national seminar on “GST: Emerging Issue and Challenge”, organised by the Department of Commerce, Aligarh Muslim University on 28 February.

In his presidential remarks, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Tabassum Shahab said that policymakers should ponder over both advantages and disadvantages of the GST and special focus should be given on smooth and effective implementation of the new tax regime. He also emphasised the need for considering socio-economic conditions of citizens who are living in underprivileged conditions and are unable to avail the basic amenities. He pointed out that researches should be related to socio-economic development of a country.

Speaking on the occasion, guest-of-honour, Prof Jabir Ali, Principal, MBA Programme, IIM, Lucknow, talked about the advantages and disadvantages of GST. He said it is a big move towards introducing a single tax system in the country. He said that this tax system is fully dependent on the ICT and all small, medium and big enterprises will have to empower themselves with ICT facilities to cope with it.

Prof Md Shakil Khan, Dean, School of Management Studies, BBA University, Lucknow highlighted the importance of research which should have a vision and an orientation to society while reaching out to common people and is significant to policymakers.

Prof Nawab Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Convenor of the seminar thanked the guests and participants for their cooperation in successful organisation of the seminar. He also expressed gratitude to the co-patrons, Prof Imamul Haque and Prof S Hussain Ashraf, faculty members and delegates for their participation.

Prof M Mohsin Khan, Patron and Chairman, Department of Commerce presented concluding report mentioning that around 167 research papers were presented in the seminar.

Dr Asif Khan proposed the vote of thanks, while Dr Mohd Nayyer Rahman conducted the programme.

Prof Sheeba Hamid was the organising secretary and Prof Nafees A Khan and Dr M Anwar Ahmad were the coordinators. Ms Zeenat Fatima (Research Scholar) prepared the report of the proceedings.
