Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Mohammad Salim Engineer, while addressing the monthly briefing at JIH headquarters on May 5 said that the recent development in judiciary has put a question mark on its credibility as people’s trust in judiciary is decreasing by the day. The handling of Justice Loya’s case has raised a question mark on the functioning of the judiciary. The Government’s rejection of the name of a judge put forward by the Collegium seemingly due to his earlier order on the President rule imposed by the BJP government in the state and what is happening in the judiciary is a serious threat to our democracy.

While welcoming the death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years, the Secretary General said that death penalty and stringent punishment should be given to every rapist and age should not come in the way of punishment. Besides, all the factors that can lead to such a situation like use of alcohol and pornography should also be completely banned.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has condemned the attack on the civilians in Syria, Palestine and Afghanistan. Jamaat also condemned the recent aerial attack on Syria by the US, France and other nations and believes that it is a clear violation of international norms to respect the sovereignty of any country. The organisation has urged the UN to intervene and stop these attacks and mass killings of civilians in Syria by both the foreign forces and the Asad regime.

While replying to a question on the recent attacks on AMU students, the JIH leader said that it is a conspiracy to keep Muslims involved in such controversies to divert attention from the real issues and keep targeting Muslims for one or the other reasons to polarise sentiments, keeping in mind elections ahead.

On the question of disruption of Friday prayers in about 10 locations in Gurgaon, he said it is not only about Namaaz, these anti-social elements are trying to harm Muslims and their identity in one way or the other just for the sake of polarisation. The local people in the area handle the situation very well. All the stakeholders should take note of the incidents and intervene accordingly.
