At the monthly press meet held in the national capital on 3 September, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind expressed concern on the brutal murder of renowned writer and educationist M.M. Kalburgi in Dharwad and strongly condemned renaming of cities and roads on communal grounds.

Engineer Muhammad Salim, Secretary General JIH, while addressing the press meet said that the murder of M.M. Kalburgi, activist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune and veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare in Kolhapur were pre-planned and aimed at intimidating all those who are vocal and criticise the fascist forces in the country. He demanded immediate arrest of and stringent punishment to the perpetrators of such crimes.

On the decision of NDMC to rename Aurangzeb Road after former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the JIH Secretary-General said since the NDA came to power there has been constant effort to abolish religious identities and symbols and the renaming is aimed at rewriting history and demonising historical personalities. “Creating an atmosphere of hatred against a particular community will go against the very ethos and secular fabric of the country,” he averred.

Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Omari, Ameer JIH, while replying to a question told NDTV that the Qur’ān clearly mentions the procedure, process and precaution that need to be applied while pronouncing talaq and therefore any decision should be based on the guidelines of the Holy Qur’ān and the Shari’ah laws. The JIH Ameer, on the question of manipulation and twist and turns in the projection of the Census Report, said that efforts were made not only to conceal the positive aspect of the Census regarding Muslims but also facts were twisted to create negative impact and distort the facts and the figures to serve their vested political ends.

On the question of Samajwadi Party breaking the grand alliance in Bihar, Maulana Omari said it is unfortunate instead of consolidating the alliance formed after so many years he is doing the opposite and many things are coming out as the possible reasons behind this break-up.

The Jamaat leader also said that the proposed visit of the President and the Prime Minister to Israel is neither good for the country nor for the people. He therefore demanded cancellation of their visit to Israel.
