Condemning the alleged persecution of Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar, the West Bengal unit of the Students’ Islamic Organisation of India, (SIO), staged a protest near the Myanmar Consulate in Kolkata.

“The government (of Myanmar) has to provide citizenship for all the Rohingya people and must provide secure shelter for them,” stated the memorandum submitted by the SIO. They also expressed concern over the recent “exhumation on 1 and 4 May, 2015, of dozens of bodies from mass gravesites” near human traffickers’ camps in Southern Thailand.

The SIO leadership appealed to the world powers to put pressure on the Myanmar government to stop the atrocities against Rohingyas. “The world powers should build up pressure on the Myanmar government so as to ensure that it takes concrete steps to stop the brutal persecution,” Sadab Masum, member of the SIO’s central committee, said.
