On one year completion of forced disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmad, students and activists, including Najeeb’s Mother Fatima Nafees and his sister Sadaf Irshad called for an indefinite protest at CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) headquarters in New Delhi unless and until CBI DIG briefs them regarding the case. The protest in which students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia and social activists participated started on 13 October.

“It has been one year to the forced disappearance of Najeeb but there is no development in the case. We are demanding here that one of CBI officers come and brief us about what they have done regarding the case. Then only, we will decide what we are going to do,” said Wasiq Nadeem, a social activist who is playing the instrumental role in the issue.

During the protest, there was clash between the protesters and the policemen who were heavily deployed there in order to control the angry protesters. The protesters were trying to push the fortress of the barricade while the police personnel were relentlessly pushing them back by their stick. Some students got injured.

The case of Najeeb Ahmed’s forced disappearance has been transferred to different security agencies. It was transferred from Delhi Police to Crime Branch and then from Crime Branch to CBI by Delhi High Court. Yet, there is no development in the case.

“We should not see this case in isolation as the case did not remain consistent. It has continuously been transferred from one agency to another and those agencies did not regularly show adequate interest. It was first given to Delhi Police then Crime Branch, SIT and eventually CBI. The same document which was presented in the earlier hearing by CBI was presented in the next hearing. This is the height of negligence. On 16 October, there is another hearing on the case. Our demand is why the accused who had beaten Najeeb were not investigated properly. Why is the lie detector test not being conducted on them?” said Saadath Husain, one of JNU students.

Husain alleged that it is the communalisation of the security agency because of which there is no development in the case. He said, “We will have to see how the institutions are being affected by communalisation. If we see the case through this angel, the question arises whether the institution is doing its job honestly? This is actually the reason that the security agencies are not getting any lead of a Muslim student who has been disappeared from a central university for a year”.
