Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, in a monthly press meet held at its headquarters on 7 November, expressed concern over the growing atmosphere of intolerance and violence against minorities, Dalits and the weaker section of the society. It also spoke on the issue of Uniform Civil Code which has been tossed up time and again.

Dr. Muhammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General JIH, while addressing the press meet said that the atmosphere of fear and insecurity has been created against the minority and Dalits. The manner in which awards have been returned reveals the consciousness of the civil society and our intellectual community towards growing intolerance which is rising by the day. Even RBI Governor has expressed concern on intolerance and he believes that such atmosphere is neither good for the country nor it would be feasible for the investment.

Maulana Jalauddin Omari, Ameer, JIH, while replying to a question said that the Government has on many occasions expressed its inability to impose Uniform Civil Code and has always maintained that it can only be done with a consensus on it. India is such a diverse country where religions and cultures and customs get change after one place to another. Under such circumstances it is impractical to think of such laws.

On the question of misinterpretation of Shari’ah laws, he said there is a committee of AIMPLB which is responsible to look into such a matter as well as to educate and inform people about its use and also against its misuse.

Nusrat Ali, Vice president of JIH, in reply to a question, said that the Samajwadi Party has not been able to fulfil the promises made by the party as it has failed on the law and order situation. The good performance of the BSP is not that people have supported the party because they consider it to be the best but they have voted because they have seen what the SP has done for them or how the Government has ruled the state during its regime. He also informed that if need arises, a delegation would try to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on the atmosphere prevailing in the country.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind also claimed that it supports the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in its efforts towards the preservation of Muslim personal law in India.
